First things first, a reality check: You can’t ‘cure’ blackheads, because they’re not a sign you’re a defective human (meaning that even Beyoncé has probably experienced a blackhead at least once in her life). In fact, these pesky little spots are simply excess oil that has become trapped inside a pore. When the oil is exposed to air, it oxidises, which is what creates the black appearance.

So while you can’t buy your way to eternally blackhead-free skin, regularly treating yourself to a pore-clearing mask will help keep your complexion clear in the long run.

The good news is, all the best blackhead masks are pretty easy to identify, thanks to a host of tried and tested sebum-absorbing ingredients. Alpha-hydroxy-acids should be your first port of call – these chemical resurfacers dissolve all the oil and gunk that can evolve into a blackhead. Similarly, humble clay (you might find it in an ingredients list as kaolin) is a brilliant tool in teasing out those tiny black dots. It essentially acts like a magnet, soaking up any oil and impurities from your pores.
